Next-Generation Geothermal Investment 2026–2030: What Fervo's Cape Station Proves — and What It Doesn't - Part II

9. Strategic Recommendations

What should an energy investor require before funding a next-generation geothermal project?

Five things: an independent reservoir review; at least 12 months of operating data; a named counterparty with disclosed contract terms; a firm interconnection agreement with an in-service date; and committed debt for the next phase. These are GFJ diligence criteria, not buy or sell advice. On the evidence in this report, Cape Station does not yet meet any of the five in full.

For investors. Use the checklist below as a gate for each funding decision. The thresholds follow the evidence gaps in Sections 4 and 6, and each ties to a documented risk.

Source: GFJ analysis. Thresholds are editorial criteria for diligence, not investment advice.

Methodology note. Thresholds are GFJ editorial judgement drawn from the evidence gaps in Sections 4 and 6, not industry standards. Each links to a Section 6 risk it is designed to test.

[INTERACTIVE TOOL – iFRAME EMBED]Geothermal diligence checker. Four inputs: project stage; reservoir evidence; offtake; interconnection. Output: a diligence status (reject for now, monitor, or proceed to full diligence) with a three-line rationale and the evidence that would change it. Wording on screen: "diligence status, not investment advice".

Methodology note. Logic mirrors the scorecard grades and the Section 9 thresholds; it returns a diligence status and reasons, not a buy or sell signal.

For utilities and data-centre buyers. Seek four protections: delivery security such as a bond or credit support, rights to replacement power if delivery fails, performance thresholds that reset price or volume, and staged volumes tied to milestones. Keep non-binding frameworks, including Google's 3 GW, out of resource plans as firm capacity, and count only signed megawatts with an in-service date.

For policymakers. Four measures would shrink the evidence gaps: public disclosure of well-test and seismic data, faster permitting with a statutory deadline, transmission planning for rural geothermal sites, and drilling-risk insurance or a geological-data database of the kind AccelerateEU proposes (22 April 2026, per EGEC).

Before committing capital to any phase of Cape Station beyond Phase I, request Fervo's monthly wellhead temperature and net megawatt series for the first 12 months from 30 September 2026, commission a reservoir review of that series that does not rely on Fervo's model, and make Phase II funding conditional on both. Until 30 September 2027, when 12 months of operating data exist, treat any Phase II decision as resting on company projections rather than observed output.

10. Executive FAQ

How much does geothermal electricity cost per MWh?

Conventional geothermal costs about US$67–111/MWh in the United States (Lazard, July 2026) and averaged about US$60/MWh globally in 2024 (IRENA, via a trade-press summary). Next-generation costs are not independently confirmed. Wood Mackenzie's US$79/MWh for Cape Station is a single-source figure, and the IEA's figure of about US$50/MWh and the US Department of Energy's US$45/MWh are targets for 2035, not observed costs.

What does Fervo's US$421 million financing for Cape Station actually prove about geothermal bankability?

It proves that lenders committed US$421.4m to one project, and nothing wider. Fervo had drawn US$212.3m of the Project Granite facility by 30 June 2026 (grade F). The loan terms and an independent cost basis were not found, so the financing does not show a repeatable standard for the sector.

How much does next-generation geothermal electricity cost per MWh, and which assumptions drive it?

Capital cost, capacity factor and contract price drive it. Fervo reports about US$7,000/kW for Phase I against Lazard's conventional range of US$5,135–6,635/kW, and its US$5,500/kW and US$3,000/kW figures are targets ([SINGLE-SOURCE]). A capacity factor between 80% and 90% (Lazard) and operating cost of US$125/kW-yr (IRENA, via a summary) also move the result, and firm clean power has been put at US$100–130/MWh (Rystad, as cited in Fervo's S-1/A). An independently observed next-generation cost per MWh was not found.

What are the biggest financial risks to Fervo's Cape Station through 2030?

Four stand out: reservoir life, transmission, Phase II funding and counterparty concentration. Reservoir life rests on a 20% reported recovery factor against a 30.5% assumption (grades C and D), and transmission on about 290 MW of rights against 384 MW contracted (grade C). Phase II funding rests on a US$940m filing figure that conflicts with GFJ arithmetic of about US$2.2bn ([CONFLICT]), and the 658 MW of binding contracts at IPO has not been reconciled with the “over 1 gigawatt” Fervo reported in October 2026.

Can other developers replicate Cape Station's economics?

Not yet. Phase II sits beside Phase I, Eavor's Geretsried site was reported at 0.5–2.0 MWe gross against an 8.2 MWe target (grade D), and no site outside Utah and Nevada has produced power. Replication would be shown by a new site delivering on schedule at a disclosed cost per kilowatt.

How do Fervo, Eavor, Sage Geosystems and XGS Energy compare as investments?

They sit at different stages, so the data are not comparable. Only Fervo has a commissioned commercial unit (33 MW net, grade F); Eavor is reported below target, and Sage and XGS each have agreements of up to 150 MW but no disclosed operating output. Costs per kilowatt for the three other developers were not found.

What should an energy investor require before funding a next-generation geothermal project?

Five pieces of evidence, with the absence of any one a reason to pause. They are an independent reservoir review, at least 12 months of metered output, a named counterparty with disclosed terms, a firm interconnection agreement and committed next-phase debt. Section 9 sets the proceed, monitor and reject thresholds (GFJ criteria, not investment advice).

Research Limitations

This report uses only the evidence we could find and verify by 22 October 2026. Where a fact was missing, we say so and do not estimate it. The gaps below limit how far the conclusions can be pushed.

Fervo and Cape Station

• The full IPO documents were not read end to end, and the risk-factor pages of the 424B4 prospectus after about page 39 were not read. Several prospectus points reach us second-hand through news outlets.

• No independent source confirms the US$7,000/kW, US$5,500/kW or US$3,000/kW figures. No single total capital cost for Phases I and II was found, and the US$940m Phase II figure is unreconciled with GFJ arithmetic of about US$2.2bn.

• Current per-well cost for the Phase II design, per-well flow rates and lateral lengths for all Phase I wells are not public. The only dated per-well cost is from February 2024.

• The buyer of GeoBlock 1 could not be confirmed; the Shell Energy report rests on one outlet. Cape-only contracted megawatts are not broken out, and 658 MW at IPO versus “over 1 gigawatt” in October 2026 is not reconciled.

• The primary release for Google's 396 MW agreement and the 2024 Google and NV Energy release were not found; the deal is confirmed by three secondary outlets only. No government loan for Cape was found.

• No Cape Station well-test series, decline rate, wellhead temperature record or independent reservoir review is public. GeoBlock 1 has run for about three weeks.

• Fervo's response to the Morpheus Research report and to the GeoExpro articles was not found, and Fervo's third-quarter 2026 results are not yet due.

• The route, owner, in-service date and curtailment history of the Cape transmission path are unknown, and the filing with the California Public Utilities Commission was found but not read.

• No analysis of seismic events from USGS, the Utah Geological Survey or Fervo's catalogue was done, and no Utah water-rights filings with volumes were retrieved.

• The Project Red 600-day article, and the papers by Libbey and Murphy (2026) and Singh (2025) cited by GeoExpro, were not opened.

Costs and markets

• The IRENA US$60/MWh figure rests on a trade-press summary; the IRENA report PDF was not read. No primary world generation figure was found.

• World capacity figures conflict (17,173 MW from ThinkGeoEnergy against 15.67 GW in an Indian government document), as do US figures (3,953 MW against 2,696 MW).

• Competing-technology costs come from Lazard only. No second source for nuclear, solar plus storage, gas or offshore wind was retrieved, no BloombergNEF series was used, and Lazard does not split out enhanced geothermal.

• No verified cost per kilowatt or per well exists for Sage, XGS, Quaise or Eavor. Sage's 2026 project status and Eavor's metered output after December 2025 could not be confirmed, and the Quaise round is reported as US$134m by one outlet and US$144m by another.

• The IEA's Energy and AI report gives no geothermal figure, and no IEA data-centre geothermal price benchmark exists in the material read.

Regulation and regions

• United States: the geothermal-specific text of the 45Y and 48E credits could not be confirmed, no 2026-dated tax-credit source was found, and the status of the House geothermal bills after March 2026 was not checked.

• EU and Germany: provisions of RED III and the Net-Zero Industry Act, the European Parliament resolution, and the date the GeoBG entered into force could not be confirmed. The outcome of Enel's Tuscan concession renewal is unknown.

• United Kingdom and China: no UK government policy document or contracts-for-difference treatment was retrieved, and China's installed power capacity, the National Energy Administration notice text and Five-Year Plan targets are unverified.

• India: the official policy text was not located, the reservoir temperature at Puga is reported inconsistently, and no investment figure or cost per megawatt exists. Indonesia, Kenya and other markets were covered only at the level shown.

Quotations and method

• Every quotation was taken from a page read through a summarising tool and must be checked against the live page. Quotes from the European Commission, Meta, Microsoft, Southern California Edison, NV Energy and Indian ministries were not found in the review window.

• Several publication dates are inferred from web addresses, ThinkGeoEnergy figures are its own tracking, Lazard's geothermal numbers are inflation-adjusted from an earlier edition, and the first-quarter 2026 Fervo release was read through a third-party mirror.
